Things are looking pretty grim for Gala Bingo these days. Just a few weeks ago, they closed five bingo clubs and this past week they announced to staff that they would be cutting managerial jobs across the 150 remaining bingo clubs. They are citing the new bingo tax increase and the ban on smoking for reducing the number of players and therefore revenue.
One memo said, “As you are aware, the bingo industry has, over the past two years, faced an unprecedented level of decline due to the impact of the smoking ban and punitive legislative change. As a result the company has reviewed every aspect of its business and a key part of this is the way in which our clubs are structured to meet the challenge”.
Within the next month, changes will be implemented that will specifically affect those in the positions of deputy manager, assistant manager, team leader or departmental controller. With the new structure, these positions will be eliminated to be replaced with new job titles with half of the number of employees.
